Well, it turns out that quite a surprising number of those get shut down for ‘legal’ reasons too. It nearly killed the whole ROM hacking scene for Chrono Trigger.
As any budding fan game developer knows, the worst thing that can happen to a project is the IP owner sending a cease and desist notice to shut it down.
